The San Diego State baseball team looked at the Mountain West Conference season as a fresh start, full of possibilities and brimming with hope.
Hope of stopping a losing streak that had reached 13 games heading into the MWC preseason tourney on Wednesday – a chance to, basically, begin he conference season undefeated.
After losing to New Mexico 3-2 on Wednesday, SDSU went on to beat Utah 5-0 on Thursday and TCU 9-7 on Saturday.
The Aztecs (8-24, 2-1 in MWC play) are now owners of a two-game winning streak. And all those things that were missing before – clutch hitting, solid pitching and mistake-free defense – seemed to be there.
“It’s good to get the monkey off our back,” head coach Tony Gwynn said after Thursday’s victory. “I’m just happy we got the win. The streak is over, and (the) guys can finally relax and say, ‘Hey let’s play some baseball and have some fun.'”
SDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against the Horned Frogs (14-15, 2-1 MWC), capped off by an RBI single by junior Brock Ungricht that scored senior Paul Smyth. Ungricht finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.
After posting another run in the third inning, the Aztecs tallied an additional five runs in the fifth, highlighted by junior Quintin Berry’s RBI double into left field –
