Water polo drops top-10 matchup After losing its last two games, both to top-10 teams, the San Diego State water polo team looked to end the streak against No. 8 UC Irvine. SDSU came out of the gates flat as UCI pounced right away to gain an early 3-0 lead.
The Aztecs would rally and find themselves tied with the Anteaters 6-6 at halftime. Senior two meter defense Leanne Ford and junior utility Amber Pezzolla scored the goals to tie the game.
SDSU gave up three goals in the third period and trailed by a goal. The Aztecs took a lead in the fourth quarter, 10-9, but ran out of gas as UCI scored the last three goals of the game and took a 12-10 victory.
Ford led the Aztecs with four goals and freshman driver Anique Hermann scored two goals. The loss dropped SDSU to 11-6 this season. Lacrosse falls to Cal The SDSU women’s lacrosse team knew it was going to go through some growing pains in its inaugural season.
On Saturday it felt some of those pains. After the first half against Cal, the Aztecs were down by nine goals. During the first half, SDSU was down by two goals early, 4-2, but the Golden Bears continued to score the next seven goals and built up to 12-3 at the half.
Both teams scored six goals during the second half of the game and Cal won 18-9. Freshman goalie Sammy Slattery played the whole game and made 12 saves. Sophomore Meris Walsh led the Aztecs in goals with five.
NCAA tournament start time The start time for SDSU’s game against the N.C. State Wolfpack was announced late Sunday night. The team will play at 9:40 a.m. on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
Women’s matchup set The SDSU women’s basketball team was rewarded for its’ Mountain West Conference Tournament win. The reward was a 12 seed in the Kingston bracket. The Aztecs will take on the fifth-seeded LSU Tigers.
