Women’s basketball preseason rank
Lindy’s Sports ranked the SDSU women’s basketball team No. 25 in its College Basketball Preseason Top-25 poll.
The Aztecs, who were the MW regular-season and tournament champions, return four starters and nine letterwinners after finishing 25-7 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The 2012 MW Player of the Year and the Associated Press All-American Courtney Clements, who averaged 17.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, and MW Newcome of the Year and first-team all- MW selection Chelsea Hopkins, who averaged 10.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.5 assists last year during her first season on Montezuma Mesa, highlight the returning starters.
SDSU plays an exhibition game against Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Viejas Arena.
Ongaro wins several awards
Junior forward Jordan Ongaro and the rest of the men’s soccer team have had quite a week.
The Aztecs went 3-0 in their past three games, including a 9- 0 trashing of North Florida, and Ongaro was also recognized for his outstanding play.
Most recently, Ongaro was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. This award comes after the Canadian landed a spot on TopDrawerSoccer.com and College Sports Madness’ national team of the week, as well as being named the conference player of the week by the Pacific-12 Conference and CSM.
Since Sept. 14, Ongaro has scored four goals and added an assist, highlighted by a hat trick against North Florida. In addition, he was also named to the all-tournament team at the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational in Riverside last week.
“It was a very big surprise to me,” Ongaro said. “It’s a great feeling to be honored.”
