Senior guard Chelsea Hopkins was selected as the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the MW announced on Monday. This is the fourth of her career and the second this season.
Returning to her hometown of Las Vegas, Hopkins helped the Aztecs defeat UNLV 74-60 by recording her second triple-double of the season, posting 22 points, which ties a career-high, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. The triple-double is the sixth in MW history and Hopkins is the first player in conference history with multiple triple-doubles in the same season. Three days later, Hopkins helped SDSU defeat Wyoming 66-43 by scoring 14 points and recording eight rebounds and eight assists, along with five steals. Hopkins was also named the MW Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Hopkins is the second Aztec this season to be honored two times, after senior forward Courtney Clements was selected in two consecutive weeks.
Aztecs drop out of Top 25
After consecutive losses to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Wyoming last week, the No. 15 San Diego State men’s basketball team no longer has the No. 15 ranking in front of its name.
The Aztecs dropped out of The Associated Press men’s basketball Top 25 poll for the first time in 24 regular-season polls, the last 11 weeks of last season and the first 12 weeks of this season. The USA Today coaches poll dropped SDSU from No. 14 to No. 25.
SDSU ranked in 42 of 49 polls since the start of the 2010-11 season. The 23 weeks ranked was the ninth-longest streak in the nation.
Football will play in West Division of Mountain West
The SDSU football team will play in the West Division of the Mountain West, the league’s directors of athletics announced. Beginning the 2013-14 academic year, the 12-team football alignment and 11-school conference will be split into the Mountain Division and the West Division.
The West Division will consist of SDSU, Fresno State, the University of Hawai’i, the University of Nevada, San Jose State and UNLV. The Mountain Division will consist of Air Force, Boise State University, Colorado State University, the University of New Mexico, Utah State and the University of Wyoming.
Each team will play five games against divisional opponents and three games against opponents from the other division. The winner of each division will play in the conference championship, which will be hosted by the highest-ranked divisional champion in the Bowl Championship Series standings. The MW Championship is scheduled to be played on Dec. 7.
There will not be divisions for men’s and women’s basketball. Each team will play an 18-game conference schedule made up of home-and-home games against eight schools and single games against two other teams in the league.
