The San Diego State men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for seventh place out of 15 schools last Monday and Tuesday in its first tournament of the new season.
The Aztecs traveled up to Bremerton, Wash. to play in the Kikkor Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club and were sitting in 11th place after the first day of competition.
Freshman Ricky DeSantis led SDSU in his first collegiate competition by tying for No.15 in the individual scoring after posting a 1-over 217 throughout three rounds. Sophomore Kevin Ko finished one stroke behind with a 2-over 218, tying for No. 20.
DeSantis led the Aztecs after the first day with a 1-over 145 after 36 holes with Ko two shots behind at 3-over 147. Senior Austin Kaiser and Junior Xander Schauffele were at 4-over 148 and 8-over 152, respectively, while senior James Holley rounded out the squad with a 10-over 154 after the first day.
Kasier shot a final round of 1-under 71 to tie for No. 25, rising up from No. 38 from the first day. Schauffele overcame an up-and-down day to also card a 1-under 71 and tied for No. 44. Holley also endured a challenging day at the Olympic Course with five birdies negated by five bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot a 2-over 74 and tie for No. 57.
Meanwhile, junior Cheng Tsung-Pan from the University of Washington held off challenges from Brigham Young University’s sophomore Joe Parkinson and Washington State’s sophomore Michael Anderson to claim the individual prize with a stellar 11-under 205 during the three-round tournament.
The Aztecs will hit the links again hoping to improve in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 27 and 28 as they play in the William H. Tucker Invitational at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
