More than 150 student protesters marched to President Elliot Hirshman’s office to show their discontent with the recently-approved Student Success Fee after the May Day Walkout. San Diego State police, professors and leaders from Student Life and Leadership were also present.
After a series of speeches given by protesters, students walked from Scripps Cottage to Manchester Hall. May Day began in 2006 as a protest for immigration reform. Speakers initially address immigration issues, but the event eventually shifted toward a demonstration against the fee.
Protesters left messages in chalk to Hirshman outside the hall walkway and stairs, reading, “Why should we have to pay for success?” and, “I can’t even afford food.”
Approximately 60 protesters sat outside of the president’s office for about an hour and a half.
