The San Diego State Aztecs (4-4, 3-2 Mountain West) were defeated on the road by the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (6-3, 3-2 MW) 30-14.
With the win, the Wolf Pack takes control of first place in the West division of the conference.
It was a tough night for sophomore running back Donnel Pumphrey who fumbled the ball twice — once in the red-zone — and had a season-low 85 yards and no touchdowns. It was just the second time this season that Pumphrey did not score and his lowest yardage total since he rushed for 89 against Oregon State University in September.
Senior quarterback Quinn Kaehler hit junior wide receiver Jemond Hazely for a score to give the Aztecs the lead at half, but that was his only touchdown of the game. Kaehler went 21 of 36 with 189 yards.
Nevada gave SDSU a dose of its own medicine, rushing for 229 yards compared to 135 for the Aztecs.
SDSU’s defense played stout holding Nevada’s versatile senior quarterback Cody Fajardo to four yards rushing and 109 yards passing, but a 43-yard rushing touchdown from freshman running back James Butler and a one-yard rush from junior running back Don Jackson in the fourth quarter sealed the Aztecs’ fate.
