The San Diego State swim team has proven it is a force to be reckoned with this season with a perfect record and this week’s Mountain West Swimmer of the Week.

The Aztecs have won 68 of their last 69 head-to-head meets, giving them a 9-0 record in dual meets so far for this season. Their latest victory came this weekend in Colorado, where they competed in a dual meet against both Colorado State University and the University of Idaho.

Junior Natilee Ruiz and sophomore Anika Apostalon won two events each. During this meet, Ruiz took first in the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke.

Apostalon defeated her competition in the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle, as well as helping to win the 200-meter freestyle relay, which she swam in with junior Whitney Weisz and seniors Chelsea Bailey and Maddy Dalcamo.

Apostalon has proven to be a strong competitor this year, having won at least two events every week since the season began and earning the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week award for her performance against the University of Hawaii. This is the fourth time she’s been awarded the weekly award.

SDSU swim also had six second-place finishes, two by Berggren in the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley, one by Bailey in the 100-meter freestyle. Senior Dana Michaels, freshman Corinn Casper and senior Loreen Whitfield each took second in one event, allowing the team to rack up points.

In total swim won eight of the 14 events and dive took one. The one dive event was the 1-meter board and it was won by freshman Alex Caplan. She also got second place in the 3-meter board dive event. Both of these scores qualified her for the NCAA Zone diving meet in March, which she had previously qualified for with the 1-meter board after last week’s dual meet against Hawaii.

The Aztecs’ next diving event will be Nov. 7 at the University of Southern California for the Trojan Diving Invitational. Swimmers will not compete again until Nov. 20 when they travel to East Los Angeles College for the Arena Invitational.
