ANAHEIM — It doesn’t make the loss feel any better for San Diego State men’s basketball fans, but the team that knocked SDSU out of the NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16 advanced to the Final Four on Saturday.
After beating the Aztecs 74-67 on Thursday, Connecticut scraped by Arizona 65-63 at the Honda Center to advance to the Final Four in Houston next week.
“The buzzer went off; I grabbed the ball and started running around,” UConn guard Shabazz Napier said after the game. “It was happy enjoyment for me.”
UConn superstar guard Kemba Walker scored 20 points and guard Jeremy Lamb added 19 more as the Huskies overcame Arizona forward Derrick Williams’ 20 points. The Huskies were outscored 38-33 in the second half, but still found a way to knock off the No. 5-seeded Wildcats, who beat No. 1-seeded Duke on Thursday.
After the game, Arizona’s players said Williams’ first-half foul troubles hurt them in the end.
“He opens up a lot of looks for other people,” Wildcat guard Lamont Jones said of Williams. “And with him out of the game we didn’t do so good.”
The Final Four will take place on April 2.
