All-American honors
With 16 freshmen on a 32-man roster, there were bound to be young players receiving postseason honors for the SDSU baseball team.
As was the case for pitcher Cole Swanson and outfielder Cody Smith, who were named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
Smith, who graduated from Santana High School, hit .320 this season with 11 doubles and 30 RBI while earning a spot on the All-Mountain West Conference second-team.
Swanson, also a local product from Torrey Pines High, pitched his way to a 4-2 record with a 3.23 ERA. Swanson was also named second-team All-Mountain West Conference.
Record-breaking season ends
The San Diego State men’s golf team saw its season come to a close with a tie for 16th place at the NCAA championships, which ended on June 2.
The team finished with a 34-over 898 at the par-72, Karsten Creek Golf Club.
Junior J.J. Spaun finished in a tie for third place and freshman Todd Baek tied for 10th.
Even though the team didn’t take home the national championship, it still won the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA Tucson Regional.
