Smith delivers walk-off win

Looking for its first win of the season, sophomore Cody Smith delivered for the San Diego State baseball team in dramatic fashion on Sunday against the University of Washington.

Smith, who was swinging a hot bat, drove a 1-0 pitch into the gap in right-center field to bring home the tying and winning runs.

After having relinquished a 6-2 lead, the Aztecs would storm back to eventually set up Smith’s ninth-inning heroics in a 10-9 victory.

As the series started on Friday, SDSU got off to a rocky start.

The Aztecs fell to the Huskies 7-4 in the season opener, in which they held a two-run lead into the eighth inning.

Despite a quality start from ace Cole Swanson, which featured six innings of one-run work and four strikeouts, SDSU was unable to retain the lead as the Huskies’ bats came alive in the eighth for four runs.

The team would remain winless after two contests as well after dropping a roller-coaster Saturday night game 12-9.

Although it erased a four-run deficit in the sixth and a three-run deficit in the seventh, SDSU was unable to regain the lead in a contest that eventually saw Washington score four runs in the ninth.

The Aztecs will look to even their record at 2-2 when they resume play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at UC Riverside.
