New York Fashion Week came and went like a cool summer breeze. The crazy swirl of countless shows and endless inspiration has finally calmed down, and now we’re ready to report back to you with our favorite trends.

Indecisive Hemlines

They say when the economy goes down, skirt lengths follow. Though the up, down and all-around hemlines of spring Fashion Week gave no indication as to what direction our economy is heading, the must-have trend will certainly be making a dent in our wallets once it trickles down into the stores. Designers like Jason Wu and Vera Wang featured the so-aptly-named mullet hemlines, while BCBG opted for more asymmetrical, sewing-machine-snafu looks.

Pajama Jam

Everyone’s favorite junior high dress-up day just became stylish, and “OMG,” we’re, like, totally freaking out. With silky floor-grazing pants and matching button-up blouses gracing their collections, fashion houses Diane von Furstenberg and The Row made it a tiny bit easier to get dressed in the morning — without resorting to your decade-old flannels and trusty Mickey Mouse T-shirt.

Mad about Metallics

As our good friend Heidi Klum loves to say, “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out.” Silver and gold got the boot as designers opted for a bevy of more colorful metallic hues. Purple was Prabal Gurung’s metallic shade of choice, while Suno dared to send shiny, in-your-face reds down the runway.

Peplum Party

Spring 2012’s peplum throwback has us wanting to party like its 1949. This flouncy ‘round-the-waist addition puts an interesting spin on last season’s high-waisted skirts. Cushnie et Ochs took the peplum in a classically sophisticated direction, while Lela Rose went the bohemian route. So, ladies, go ahead and have that extra helping. These hip-hiding pieces will be your new best friends.

Sporty

Sports were never one of our strong suits. Something about donning those drastically unflattering uniforms prevented us from participating. But this season’s athletically-inclined trend has us dying to suit up. Alexander Wang was this trend’s power player with his mesh jackets and boyish bottoms. Similarly, Rag & Bone hit a homerun with the hoodies it sprinkled throughout their collection.

Though we have a high tolerance for, shall we say, interesting designs in the fashion world, not everyone can always do right in our eyes. And, so we conclude this supersized Trend Watch with a “WTF” Moment, courtesy of Marc Jacobs.
