The Long Beach State 49ers dug, but instead of striking gold, all they found was oil last night as the San Diego State women’s basketball team defeated CSULB 75-49 in front of 275 fans at The Pyramid.
The 49ers (1-5) led 13-12 with 12:43 left in the first half, but SDSU turned up the heat and went on a 12-0 run to blow the game open.
SDSU (4-2) never looked back, going up by as many as 30 points in the second half.
The Aztecs led big despite the fact that team captain Jodi Nowlin-Tres left the game with 5:22 remaining in the first half. Nowlin-Tres sprained her left ankle, and at press time the extent of her injury was unknown.
When Nowlin-Tres went out of the game, it was the seasoned veteran Olivia DiCamilli who kept the Aztecs afloat.
DiCamilli, according to SDSU head coach Beth Burns, did “a great job” of keeping the team together after Nowlin-Tres departed and finished the night with 15 points.
Another star was Deidra Rucker, who continued to make strides as a true freshman. She scored 15 points, and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
“Deidra is continuing to get more comfortable with what we’re doing,” Burns said.
With the big lead, SDSU was able to play every player at least 10 minutes, something that pleased Burns afterward.
“I’m pleased we got to play everyone, and everyone played hard,” Burns said.
But it was the defense a Burns staple that was the key to the game. The Aztecs held CSULB to 33 percent shooting from the floor.
Atiya Williams added a career-high six blocks and LaTaya Woods added 11 rebounds in the win.
The Aztecs’ next game is Friday night at Peterson Gym against Georgia State. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
