Flowers aren’t the only things that are blooming this season. The spring runways at Calvin Klein and Prada are budding with bare essentials.
Replace winter’s chenille sweaters and black go-go boots for a sexy translucent look: spring will bring bare tank tops in sheer materials, narrow leg pants and strappy sandals. Don’t be afraid to mix plaids with stripes or simply match up bold solids. For evening, throw on a slip dress with sandals and pull hair back, as seen in the February issue of Allure magazine.
So who can afford the likes of top designers? Women can find these basic items in out of the way clothing stores (On the Contrary in Ocean Beach no item over $30) and especially vintage clothing stores. Since the primary materials are polyester blends, one should find the ideal narrow groovy pants in the ’70s section of their neighborhood Salvation Army. Have a tank top shopping spree at a local trendy store in the mall, they often have two for $20 promotions.
The big statement this season will be colors. They are more inviting to the eye than ever this spring. The fashion police will be on the lookout for pale violet, baby blue, pea green, lavender and taupe. Men can strut their stuff in chinos and fitted white tees also in a polyester/cotton blend. This hybrid material is flattering on everyone, affordable, and easy to wash. Toss out those Hanes undershirts and invest in a few of these gems instead. They last longer and won’t fade as fast.
For women, the face will move from winter’s minimalist eye makeup and bold mouth to an overall natural look for spring and summer. A clean face (concealer and oil- free/water-based foundation can create the look for those who aren’t blessed with a perfect complexion), and defined brows and buff/taupe/shimmery eye shadows for eyes. Finish off the look with a favorite lip liner and lip gloss, applying generously to the center of the lower lip to create an exaggerated pout.
