As vertical construction on the Aztec Student Union continues to make progress, the Associated Students Facilities Board is mapping out details of the interior design. The board met Monday to take a final vote on what the room names will be and discuss plans for a time capsule that will be buried once construction is completed. Each floor of the student union will have a theme. The bottom floor’s room names will represent Aztec history, the second floors will represent San Diego State history and the top floors will represent the history of AS. SDSU professors specializing in Aztec tribal history were consulted to verify the cultural significance of the names selected.

A.S. Executive Vice President Darin Ruiz said it’s important to pair historic names with contemporary room themes.

“When students call buildings like Chapultepec ‘Chappie’ its not paying tribute to the culture like it should be,” Ruiz said. “We wanted to find significant names that we could also put a fun spin on to make it stick.”
