The San Diego State men’s tennis team celebrated Easter Sunday with a victory against unranked Texas Christian University.

SDSU, ranked 58th, beat TCU 5-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center.

“We knew it was going to have to be a team effort all the way down the line and our guys really came out and fought,” head coach Gene Carswell said.

The Aztecs started off the humid morning by winning all three of their doubles matches.

Senior Javier Pulgar and freshman Freddy Gelbrich were outstanding as they battled to the very end of their doubles match said Carswell.

As the day began to heat up, so did the single matches. SDSU did not know its’ fate until sophomore Juan Florez clinched the fourth match win.

“I think everybody competed hard,” freshman singles player Andranik Khachatryan said. “Overall, it was a good win for us even though they were unranked; they were a very tough team.”

The Aztecs are now 13-6 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. Before beating TCU on Sunday, SDSU defeated New Mexico last Friday 4-3.

SDSU lost all three of its’ doubles matches to New Mexico but won four of its six singles matches.

“Coming from a win like that you play with so much more confidence,” Khachatryan said.

The Aztecs must now prepare for their next game on Saturday against UNLV. The Rebels are currently 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference.

“We need to come out and practice hard everyday,” junior singles and doubles player Derek Siddiqui said. “We need to make sure to come out fighting from the first point in the doubles because I think all of us get off to a slow start.”

After UNLV, SDSU will have two more meetings before the MW Championships take place.

“The team is going in a very good direction,” Carswell said. “This is a very good team and I feel as we continue to get healthy and get back to full strength. I think we are putting ourselves in a really good position to challenge for the championship.”
