Position running for: Vice President of External Relations
Major: Political Science
Year: Senior ca
My experience:
For the past two years, I have been president of Phi Gamma Delta. This past year, I have been the elected representative for the Associated Students College of Arts and Letters. Within the College of Arts and Letters, I am also the vice president of finance.
What I would do differently than my predecessor…
I would enhance the positive media attention our university receives. Recently, SDSU has had a great deal to boast about. We Aztecs, as a community, are making great strides in science, technology, art and all areas of scholastic achievements it is time we are able to gain recognition and SDSU is given the credibility our students and school deserve.
If I could change one thing about SDSU…
I would make sure everyone on campus was proud to be an Aztec. Our university is so great and many students want to come here with over 69,000 students applying here in 2012! We need to rally together to show that SDSU is the best and really exemplify that.
If elected, my No. 1 priority would be…
To rally our voices, unite us as students and Aztecs together, so we are heard in Sacramento. We have the power to make a change and the state legislatures are finally taking notice. We need to use this newfound power, and pass legislation that secures funding to the California State Universities in the future.
fun fact:
I have been in various movies in commercials including “Leave It to Beaver” and a Super Bowl commercial!
Name: Celeste Rodriguez
Position running for: Vice President of External Relations
Major: Economics
Year: Senior
My experience:
I currently sit on the External Affairs Board as the chair of Lobby Corps. I also sit on the president’s cabinet as the legislate research commissioner, keeping the student leaders who sit on Associated Students council informed about the university, the California State Student Association, and government decisions that affect them and fellow Aztecs.
What I would do differently than my predecessor…
I will, of course, continue to fight on behalf of students for funding for higher education by meeting with elected officials and collaborating with other universities as a member of the California State Student Association. We proved in this past November election that, together, we can make a difference. I’d like to maintain that momentum and build upon our marketing and communications and Good Neighbor Program to provide students with the resources they need to fight for their own causes.
If I could change one thing about SDSU…
I would like to increase the campus community feeling. We are a force to be reckoned with when we come together, and I would love to establish more collaborative events. I want to make sure that every person on this campus feels part of not only a major, college or organization, but the university as a whole.
If elected, my No. 1 priority would be…
Advocacy. I will create innovative ways to empower all Aztecs to get involved in every level of government to advocate for their own interests.
Fun fact:
I like to have impromptu dance parties.
Name: Allie Hillis
Position running for: Vice President of External Relations
Major: Anthropology
Year: Junior
My experience:
I am the national communications coordinator for the Residential Hall Association. In that, I not only help run the organization, I also act as the voice of the 3,500 students that live in the residents halls on the regional and national levels when conferences are held.
What I would do differently than my predecessor…
I believe in the importance of collaboration among student orgs on campus. I would make a strong effort to go into different organizations that feel strongly one way or another on issues affecting them, so that I am always informed and in touch with the student body because if elected that is who I will be representing. I also believe this will encourage more students to get involved with the different advocacy programs currently on campus because it will show that their voice isn’t simply being heard by their organization, but at the school wide level as well.
If I could change one thing about SDSU…
I would increase communication among student organizations because raising awareness about what other groups are doing will only benefit everyone’s outcomes, allow larger turnouts to help make greater impacts on and off campus. Also if these skills were encouraged in younger leaders it would be building a lasting trend and increase campus awareness exponentially year after year.
If elected, my No. 1 priority would be…
To keep myself informed about how the SDSU student body feels about different issues and the different ways things such as student fees or regulations, would affect SDSU as a whole, because, as vice president of external relations, it would be my job to make the most informed decision to help SDSU and its student body.
Fun fact:
I love rock climbing at the Aztec Recreation Center or surfing at Mission Bay Aquatic Center!
