Anthemic for those nights when one can do nothing but curl into a fetal ball and get lost in the darkness, Lykke Li’s “Wounded Rhymes” is a pulsing lullaby for those broken souls.
Lykke Li’s second album was written and recorded in the sunny city of Los Angeles. When asked why she recorded it in California rather than her home country of Sweden, she said, “Right now I’m in Stockholm, and it’s so f——— cold and dark. I have such a dark mood in myself already so I don’t need things to be darker.” Fair enough.
The record kicks off with an indie-rocker tune, one could just imagine spazzed out 20-somethings flailing their arms and slam dancing. However, the next few tracks calm down on the freak-out mood slightly, making use of the petit starlet’s harmonic voice layered over some lost bass and tin drums.
“Sadness is a Blessing” and “I Know Places” are tracks to skip to if looking for perfect examples of the incredible depth of emotion from the album.
