The three candidates running for the job held by San Diego State President Stephen L. Weber will each make an individual visit to campus during the upcoming weeks, involving the community around SDSU in the selection process.
From May 1-5, the California State University Board of Trustees Search Committee and SDSU Presidential Search Advisory Committee will be hosting the candidates. Each visit will last two days and include interviews and meetings with numerous divisions on campus.
The search for SDSU’s next president, which began early this semester, is being treated with a high level of discretion. The identities of the three candidates will be withheld until April 29, three days before the first candidate’s visit.
The itinerary for the presidential candidates’ two-day visits is tightly planned. Although the first day includes only a one-hour campus tour and a dinner with the Campanile Foundation, the second day looks quite rigorous. Day two of the tour is from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and only about an hour is set aside for breaks.
The candidates are scheduled for almost a dozen meetings with various campus departments, including one with the Associated Student’s executive board and a campus open forum where anyone can ask questions. The forum, which will take place at Montezuma Hall from 4:30-5:30 p.m., is open to all students, faculty, staff and community members.
Filling Weber’s shoes will not be an easy task, considering the multitude of cutbacks the CSU system is facing. During his 14 years as president, Weber saw SDSU raise $683 million and construct $670 million in new facilities. He is the only SDSU president the majority of current students and faculty have ever known. As much as 79 percent of SDSU’s current faculty members were hired during Weber’s tenure.
