DIVE BARWINNER: EFFINSOther Favorites: The Dog, Plum Crazy
Once again, the best dive bar at San Diego State is Effin’s Pub and Grill. (You can pause reading here to let out a long, exasperated “duh.”) SDSU students show up in numbers to this institution nestled on El Cajon Boulevard. Effin’s to SDSU is like Moe’s to Homer Simpson and Springfield: you can count on having the same experience no matter your company or mood.Want to grab a beer and some fries after a hard day of work? You can do it at Effin’s. Want to watch the big game with a pitcher of brew, a slice of pizza and your buddies? You can do it at Effin’s. Want to celebrate your 21st birthday at your first real bar? More often than not, the party starts and/or ends at Effin’s.For the times you want to just hang out and knock back a few without the loud music and cramped dance floors in Pacific Beach or the “cougars” and expensive parking downtown, Effin’s is the first place that pops into mind. It has always provided two essentials to college students looking to tie one on: proximity and affordability. There are daily food and drink specials and a happy hour that offers $3 pints and $1 off mixed drinks. But Effin’s is not looked at as just a place for cheap hooch; it’s the atmosphere and ambiance that keep you coming back. Set as a traditional Irish pub, patrons kick back by sitting at the bar watching the seven big screen TVs, shoot pool, play foosball or, on certain nights, gather ’round a table and take in the one-man band that is Steve Langdon. Effin’s can be counted on as a place for a good time no matter the circumstance. Much like a best friend or significant other, Effin’s is there to help take your mind off that bad day at the office and let you relax and decompress.Which is, after all, what a good dive bar should be.
