Kim shoots 75 as women place sixth at PEClassic

The San Diego State men’s golf team is at it again.
The No. 16 Aztecs finished the final round of the USD InvitationalTuesday in a familiar position — first place. SDSU took a 14-strokelead into the final 18 holes Tuesday, and shot a final-round 295 toremain undefeatedin spring play.
The Aztecs put themselves in position for their third straight winMonday. The team shot a combined 11-over par total of 587 on thefirst 36 holes at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
“We played well today on what turned out to be a very toughcourse,” head coach Dale Walker said. “I am pleased that we have putourselves in position for another victory.”
Sophomore Mark Warman (68-73-78–219), the only player to keep hisscore under par on the opening 36 holes, slipped down the boardslightly Tuesday, while junior Lars Johansson (75-73-71–219) wasshooting his best round of the spring. They tied for second place.
Junior John Lieber (72-75-75–222) and Scott Henderson(76-75-72–223) also continued their solid spring play. Lieberfinished fourth and Henderson fifth, giving the Aztecs four golfersin the top five.
“We expect to win every tournament that we are in,” Hendersonsaid. “I think that we have a chance every week.”
The San Diego State men get a chance to try and extend theirstreak when they return to action Monday, at the Oregon DuckInvitational. The two-day tournament will be held at the EugeneCountry Club.
AztecMen’s Player of the Week
Mark Warman has been a rock for the SDSU men’s golf team. He tooka three-shot lead into the final round of the USD InvitationalTuesday, and finished tied for second. Warman also took second placeat the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, March 7-8.
Aztec Women’s Update
The San Diego State women’s golf team stayed in the hunt for aregional birth by finishing sixth at the Pioneer Electronic Classicat the Menifee Lakes Country Club, March 11-12.
Sandy Kim shot a final-round 75 to grab her third top-10 finish ofthe season and led the Aztecs to a combined 306 during the finalround.
“I am very happy with the team’s performance,” interim assistantcoach Felicia Brown said. “We are beating the teams that we need tobeat to get to regionals, and right now that is the team’s goal.”
Brown said that the strong showing gives the team confidence andsomething to build on.
The Pepperdine Waves, the defending champs, won the tournament bybreaking 300 in all three rounds. Katherine Hull of Pepperdine tookmedalist honors with a 9-under par 207.
Aztec Women’s Player of the Week
Sophomore Sandy Kim finished sixth at the Pioneer ElectronicClassic. That makes three top-10 finishes for Kim this season. “Sandyis only a sophomore,” interim assistant coach Felicia Brown said.”And she is only going to get better.”
