SJP posters vandalized and accused of bias

After the reignition of violence between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Students for Justice in Palestine at San Diego State initiated a campaign in an attempt to raise awareness within the SDSU community, hanging hand-drawn posters on campus near the Education Business Administration building which illustrated the number of deaths and wounded on the Palestinian side.

The SJP posters were first put up on Nov. 15, and they were taken down and posted again on Nov. 20. On both occasions the posters were vandalized, SJP co-chair Nadine Hassoun said.

According to SJP representative Nadir Bouhmouch, pictures of Hitler were posted over the SJP posters. Another poster was found with the statement “This is a biased source of information” written across it.

“We understand the variety of perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but are saddened by the aggressive reactions we have received and which are epitomized by this vandalism that compares our views to those of the Nazis,” Bouhmouch said.

Nadir said anti-Semitism is not on the agenda of SJP.

SJP co-chair Farah Abunadi said the posters were put up because SJP members felt the coverage of the war by American news sources was scarce.

“We understand that this is a controversial topic, but because our media does a horrible job of representing both sides, we felt the obligation to provide an outlet of education to the students of SDSU that expressed our concerns about the massacre,” Abunadi said.

Abunadi said SJP’s intention was not to provoke any group on campus.

“We refuse to be associated with Hitler or any other person who has been associated with mass genocide of an ethnicity,” Abunadi said. “We also reject attempts to equate principled criticism of Zionism or of the character or policies of Israel, with anti-Semitism.”
