Giffords communicating
In the time since her injury last month, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ condition has improved drastically. According to her chief of staff, Pia Carusone, Giffords is able to communicate with others and engage in simple conversations. However, Giffords has not yet been informed of the details of the tragic Jan. 8 event. Doctors are waiting until she can communicate at a higher capacity to speak further about what happened. Carusone said Giffords is saying new words every day and increasing her vocabulary.

CBS anchor assaulted
According to reports Tuesday, CBS Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lara Logan was beaten and sexually assaulted while covering the events in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak resigned as president. A statement by CBS said Logan found herself caught up in a mob and separated from her crew when the attack happened. The network stated that she was saved by a group of women and approximately 20 Egyptian soldiers. She has since been brought back to the U.S. and received medical treatment.

Egypt strikes
A preliminary death toll count of the 18-day riots in Egypt totals 365. Although Egypt’s Mubarak stepped down, Egyptians still frustrated with their quality of life have continued to strike since his departure. A poor economy and low-paying jobs have left many Egyptians angered, and some groups feel doubtful that much will change despite Mubarak’s resignation. Egypt’s banks and stock market are closed, and the banks may be closed through Sunday.
