Last Friday, San Diego State’s swim team competed and won a pentathlon at the Aztec Aquaplex against the University of San Diego. The Aztecs beat the Toreros 33-24, and held eight of ten spots in the top ten individual standings for the meet.
Sophomore swimmer Frida Berggren received the individual title, placing the highest out of all the swimmers.
The pentathlon consisted (<- used past tense for an event that already occurred) of five events — 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter fly, 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter backstroke and the 100-meter individual medley.
Berggren took first in butterfly with a time of 56.76 and second in the 100 meter individual medley. Her second place finish came in behind fellow Aztec sophomore Anika Apostalon, who took first in two events, the 100-meter medley and the 100-meter freestyle.
Overall, SDSU took the top three in the meet; with Berggren finishing with the highest scores, Apostalon finishing second and junior Natilee Ruiz finishing with the third highest scores.
This is the second straight year Berggren has received the highest scores for the pentathlon.
Scores for the pentathlon are calculated by factoring in the place in which each competitor finishes in each event. Points are awarded to the first, second and third place finishers. The swimmer with the most points after all events have ended receives the individual title.
Berggren was able to secure her title by finishing in the top three during three of the five events —butterfly, medley, and backstroke.
Apostalon finished a strong second by taking first in the freestyle event and second in both the butterfly backstroke.
Overall, the Aztecs team came out strong. Not only did Berggren finish with the highest scores, but the top eight highest scoring individuals were SDSU’s swimmers, allowing USD swimmers to take only the ninth and 10th places at the meet.
After the event, both teams swam against each other in a 50-yard race of all the events. Once again, the Aztecs took the best times in all of these events with junior Savannah Miller — who took fourth place in the pentathlon — winning the butterfly stroke. Apostalon took the backstroke and freshman Cecilia Zaccarelli won the breaststroke.
SDSU continues its season against Campbell University on Friday, Oct. 10. They will return home on Oct. 24 against the University of Hawaii at the Aztec Aquaplex.
