The weekend didn’t go as planned for the San Diego State volleyball team, which lost on the road to two Mountain West Conference competitors.
On Thursday, SDSU traveled to Fort Collins, Col. where they faced 25th ranked Colorado State. The Aztecs were unable to make a dent in CSU’s current first place standing in the MW, resulting in three consecutive losses, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.
Senior outside hitter Paije Pearson led the team with nine kills and nine digs throughout the three matches.
On Saturday SDSU was in Laramie, Wyo. getting ready to take on its second conference opponent of the weekend: The University of Wyoming Cowgirls.
Wyoming barely nabbed the opening two sets 25-23 and 25-22, but falling behind 2-0 didn’t seem to affect the Aztecs.
SDSU came back from the break with a newfound energy and won the third match. The set was tied 13-13 at one point, then the Aztecs proceeded to score the next seven out of eight points.
The team’s consistency led to a five point set victory of 25-20 in set number three.
In the fourth set, the match was tied at 16. This didn’t last long, as SDSU was able to take the lead for the remainder of the set because of a kill by senior outside hitter Kyley Sexton and a couple of Cowgirl hitting errors. This set win, 25-19, tied the game 2-2.
Although SDSU made an incredible comeback, Wyoming took to a three-point lead in the fifth set, and outscored SDSU 5-2. The Cowgirls’ went on to take the final set win 15-9, and the game, 3-2.
Junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch and sophomore outside hitter Raegan Shelton were standouts, making a combined 27 kills. Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch also had impressive statistics in the game, with 54 assists and 31 digs.
