If you’re not really in the mood to crank that Soulja Boy or get buck, there’s a place close to campus where you can kick back and enjoy some good ol’ country music. In Cahoots, located in Mission Valley, offers a casual hangout where people can two-step or just relax and have a beer. That was what owner David Borlick had in mind when he opened In Cahoots on Jan. 4, 1992. Borlick, who has also owned country bars in Texas, wanted to bring a little Lone Star flavor to San Diego. He also made sure that you don’t need a cowboy hat and boots to fit in.”Anybody of all ages can come and have a good time and not feel intimidated or embarrassed and just have plain old-fashioned fun,” Borlick said. “The music is not aggressive, it’s not insulting, it’s not contradictory, it’s not harsh; it’s enjoyable and you can relate to the songs. “It’s just ‘Let’s have a beer, let’s have a shot and let’s have some fun.'”Manager Gary Martin added: “I think most anyone can relate to any country song in some way. I don’t think anyone can listen to ‘Soldier Boy’ and relate to it.”If you can’t dance the “Achy Breaky” or the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” don’t worry. In Cahoots offers dance lessons at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. But the bar’s real attraction comes on Wednesday, their busiest night of the week. That is when local country station KSON takes over and In Cahoots has a more club-like atmosphere. Two-dollar drinks help too. Borlick estimates that about a thousand people visit the club on an average Wednesday.”We’ve been notorious for that for the past 16 years,” Borlick said. “It’s a big night. (On) Wednesday a lot of people come out to party.”Other specialty nights include Thursday, where you can get a steak, a baked potato and a draft beer for $5.95, and Sundays, which feature Guitar Hero and rock-paper-scissors competitions. For more information, visit www.incahoots.com or call (619) 291-1184.
