Aztecs turn in solid performance at Lexus Golf Classic in Fresno By Hector Trujillo, Staff Writer The San Diego State men’s golf team turned in its best showing in months after placing second in the Lexus Golf Classic at the Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno. The Aztecs were able to bounce back in a 13th place performance from their last tournament at the William H. Tucker Invitational played in New Mexico. SDSU was in a tie for first place after the first round by shooting a 10-under-par 278. The Aztecs were led by a stellar team effort that had not existed in the previous three tournaments. Junior Andrew Scott turned in the most impressive play. Scott finished in second place overall by posting a final round 4-under-par 68 to conclude his outstanding play. He would finish just three shots behind eventual tournament winner Greg Machtaler of BYU. Scott’s performance, however, was routinely solid since he shot the same 11-under-par final score when he played the same tournament in 2003. “This is what we needed from Andrew and the rest of the guys to break out of our slump,” head coach Ryan Donovan said. “Another performance like this one and we should be looking very good when we get to the end of the season.” SDSU finished behind eventual winner BYU, but in front of top programs like UC Riverside and tournament-host Fresno State. Another notable bright spot for the Aztecs was the solid play of senior Aaron Choi. Choi finished with a final round 2-under-par 70, placing him in 8th place overall. This was Choi’s second consecutive outstanding performance. He also finished in 11th place at the William H. Tucker Invitational. “His consistent play has kept our team in most of the tournaments so far,” Donovan said. “He has been our leader and we are coming together at the right time because of that.” SDSU has had to look to new faces this year to make up for the loss of senior standout Aaron Goldberg. Goldberg was the team leader and posted some of the best Aztec scores last season. Other notable players for SDSU in Fresno were sophomore Chad Moscovic and junior Josh Warthen. Moscovic finished 18th by shooting a 2-under-par 214, and Warthen finished in 28th place after shooting a 2-over-par 218. Donovan has made many changes to achieve better chemistry within the team. If the Aztecs are to continue to be successful he will need to do some more of the same for the next tournament. SDSU plays its last tournament of the season Oct. 25 and 26 at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside.
