The beauty of Balboa Park

Dustin Michelson, Senior Staff Photographer

For those who thirst for knowledge, Balboa Park is the perfect date destination. With more than 15 museums covering topics including cars, science and culture, there’s plenty to do and see if your date is a total sports geek or an art history nerd.

Outside the museums, there are always other festivities. While walking the main promenade, you’re sure to be treated to live music, magicians or even Shakespeare performances. People, and sometimes dog, watching is a must.

Every Sunday at 2 p.m., lovers can listen to one of the world’s biggest outdoor pipe organs perform at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. In addition, Balboa Park is stunningly beautiful. Coupled with the blessing of San Diego weather, Balboa Park offers fantastic architecture and several gardens.

Be sure to visit the lily pond and the Botanical Building to get in touch with nature. When hunger strikes, you can snack at one of many cafes, sit down for a meal

from the award-winning Prado or pack a picnic lunch and get comfortable on a grassy field.

As a student, budget is always a consideration, but do not fret. Most of the museums offer special discounts for students and free admission to select museums for San Diego County residents every Tuesday.

On a side note, you might not want to tell your date about your wise, but frugal dating strategy. San Diego offers a plethora of unique date spots, but none are as picturesque and varied as Balboa Park.
