Last Thursday night was a big moment for San Diego State business senior, Eric Landman. Also known as DJ Eric Love, he took home $1000 and first place in the Red Bull Thre3style DJ competition at Typhoon Saloon in
Pacific Beach.
Landman competed against four other DJs who are also local university students: DJ Serg of University of California, San Diego; DJ Reekz and DJ T3CH4LL of California State University, San Marcos and DJ Rohr of University of San Diego. Each DJ had 15 minutes to create a mix containing music from three genres, minimum. Landman played 29 tracks across at least four genres. The winner said he spent about three weeks working on his playlist and didn’t worry about what the competitors would play. Instead, he chose to focus on linking songs together through word play and mixing songs he hadn’t worked with before.
The competition was stiff. Supporters of each DJ were out in full force, and talk in the crowd revealed that everyone had their own expectations. But the judges of the competition were quick to declare DJ Eric Love victorious.
The judges, who were all veteran local DJs, included Alain Marquez aka. DJ Kaos, Justin Navalle, who is half of StirCrazy, and DJ Chris Cutz, who won the Red Bull Thre3style San Diego qualifier in January.
Landman started playing at local events and house parties five years ago with his brother, DJ Louis. Now, he can be found performing regularly at PB Bar & Grill and Effin’s Pub, along
with locations at the Pussycat Dolls Dollhouse.
After graduation, Landman plans to stay in the entertainment industry for at least another five years by pursuing his DJ Work, along with other
ongoing projects.
