Two San Diego State baseball players were severely disciplinedlast week for their roles in an incident that led to the arrest of abaseball recruit.
Outfielder Robert Womack was dismissed from the team and pitcherMike Garber was temporarily suspended pending a further investigationby the coaches.
The two players were acting as “hosts” for Matthew Fisher, aprospect from Chatsworth, Calif., who was on an official visit.
Fisher, 18, was arrested the weekend of Oct. 16-17, in connectionwith an alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old female student.
On Friday, the county district attorney’s office decided not topursue charges because of insufficient evidence and conflictingreports.
“Somethingoccurred,” said SDSU head baseball coach Jim Dietz. “Some things Idon’t believe in occurred. And I just can’t accept it. What happenedmade it look like this campus is out of control.”
Fisher was reportedly drinking alcohol at a fraternity party onOct. 16 before going over to a house in the 5600 block of LindoPaseo, where Womack and Garber live with the accuser. The woman toldpolice Fisher entered her bedroom while she was asleep and sexuallyassaulted her.
Dietz said he went to the house where the alleged incidentoccurred on Sunday, Oct. 17. It was there where he told the playersof his decision to discipline them.
Womack, the 1998 WAC Freshman of the Year, was dismissed becauseof prior problems.
“I was gonna remove him last year because of academics and the wayhe went about his business,” Dietz said. “People persuaded me(otherwise).”
Garber, who was third on the team in earned run average lastseason, was suspended, however Dietz said he might have not beeninvolved with anything.
Nevertheless, Dietz said Garber should have bettter handled therecruit.
“You have to hold people responsible,” Dietz said. “I assumeresponsibility because (I’m the coach, but) everybody has a two legs.Everybody has a phone. I’m not unlisted. I should have gotten a callwhen things started to break down.”
