Opponent: University of Hawaii.
Where: Tony Gwynn Stadium.
When: Today at 7 p.m., tomorrow at 5 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.
Records: Hawaii is 13-27; 5-9 Western Athletic Conference. San Diego State is 26-11-1; 9-6 WAC.
Rainbows to watch: Freshman infielder Sean Murphy is on an eight-game hitting streak, batting .400, with seven runs batted in during that span. Senior catcher Robert Medeiros is hitting .340 with seven doubles, one triple and two home runs all while driving in 14 runs in his last 13 games. Junior reliever Kameula Binkie has thrown the ball well of late, posting a 2.11 earned run average during his last 17 innings.
Aztecs to watch: Starter/reliever Chad Wanders has emerged as one of the WAC’s top pitchers. He is 4-3 with a 2.47 ERA. Look for him to have a quality series against his former team. (Wanders transferred from Hawaii after his freshman season.) Infielder Oscar Lopez has batted .436 since joining the team on March 17. Outfielder/first baseman Andy Bevins is batting .583, with two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs in his last six games.
What’s on second? SDSU has had four players at second base this season: Tavares Comeaux, Jason Klatt, Javier Ramos and Lopez. Don’t be surprised to see some shuffling at second during this series.
Line drives: Don’t be fooled by Hawaii’s record. The Rainbows have played a brutal schedule against ranked opponents such as No. 7 Wichita State, No. 8 Miami, No. 12 UCLA, No. 14 USC and No. 18 Fresno State. For the Red and Black to be successful against Hawaii, they will most likely have to outhit them. When the Rainbows have been outhit, they are a horrific 0-25. When they outhit their opponents, they are 10-1. Look for a high-scoring series. Hawaii averages more than seven runs per game and yields just over nine runs per contest. The Aztecs score an average of 9.2 runs per contest.
