University Police save I-8 jumper
After attempting to jump off the Interstate 8 overpass at about 11:25 a.m. on Sunday on College Avenue, a 48-year-old San Diego resident was caught midair by University Police.
“(It was) unreal,” University Police Lt. Robert McManus said. “(The jumper) was originally stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.”
Once the 48-year-old was out of the car, he charged the officer who then pulled out his handgun in fear of his safety, McManus said.
“We believe (the 48-year-old) was under the influence of crystal methamphetamines,” McManus said.
After seeing the gun, the man leaped over the rail of the overpass, threatened to jump and repeatedly took his hands off of the rail, McManus said.
In the meantime, additional University Police officers arrived, as well as one parking officer.
McManus said the man’s threats lasted for about 15 minutes, then he stepped over the rail back onto College Avenue.
However, as the officers reached for him, the man jumped back over and the officers literally caught him as he was about to take a leap over I-8, McManus said.
According to the police report, the man was evaluated and cleared by County Mental Health and booked into county jail for resisting arrest, being under the influence of a controlled substance and evading a police officer.
“CMH termed his desire to jump more drug related than an actual desire to hurt himself,” McManus said. “You never know what you’re going to get when you pull someone over.”
Suspected identity theft leads to single arrest
University Police said they suspect that a 25-year-old man, who was arrested in the San Diego State Bookstore last week, has been altering Social Security cards and stealing others’ identities.
When the man was arrested at around 4:45 p.m. on March 21, police found altered Social Security cards as well as computer memory cards in his backpack.
Loss prevention stopped the man because of reported suspicious behavior. He was later arrested and his backpack was searched.
The 25-year-old was booked into county jail for commercial burglary and possession of the forged/altered government documents, McManus said.
Knockout ends dispute
A male and a female were fighting at around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday in Parking Lot Q on Hardy Avenue when the 20-year-old male San Diego resident reportedly punched the female in the jaw, according to police reports.
“She’s not his girlfriend,” McManus said. “In fact, we don’t think they even know each other.”
According to the crime report, the female victim was treated by paramedics at the scene. The man was issued a misdemeanor citation and released.
Missing laptop found
University Police found a Macintosh laptop computer that had been missing for about three years at around 10 p.m. on March 21 in Parking Lot E on North College Avenue.
It appeared to police that three males were trying to break into a vehicle. When officers stopped them, the men said they were just locked out of their car, McManus said.
Once officers searched the car, they found the computer, which had been reportedly missing.
University Police officers then arrested one of the men, a 38-year-old San Diego resident, and transported him to jail for the possession of stolen property.

The man was arrested and booked into county jail.

A black Honda Civic was stolen between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday from the first level of PS 5 located on 55th Street. The owner of the vehicle is a male SDSU student, and his car is still missing, McManus said.
