Every week of the season, San Diego State women’s tennis head coach Peter Mattera writes the practice schedule for his team. On this schedule, you’ll find everything you’d expect, such as weight lifting and live ball training. But at the bottom, Mattera adds something extra. The coach writes a philosophical quote on the bottom of each, something for his players to take to heart and to the court. The quote on this week’s schedule is “Confidence is the key to your universe.” SDSU should have plenty of confidence heading into this weekend’s matches on the road against Gonzaga and Washington starting 9 a.m. tomorrow in Seattle. The Aztecs swept the Huskies last season, cruising to a 7-0 victory at home. However, UW (3-1) is on the upswing this season, fresh off a 4-3 victory over No. 28 BYU. Mattera has picked out this match as one of SDSU’s key non-conference tests.”We beat Washington pretty soundly last year but they are a Pac-10 team and we know they are a lot better than last year,” Mattera said. “(The Huskies) came down for our second Fall Classic in November, so we got to see a lot of their players there. We saw that they are significantly better.”To Mattera, the key to his team’s confidence will be to build upon last weekend’s doubleheader victory.”With every match we play we want to get a little bit better,” Mattera said. “So, certainly this weekend we’re looking to play even more confidently than last weekend (against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton).”Playing better than last weekend may be a challenge for the Aztecs (2-0). SDSU finished last Saturday by winning all but two matches in the doubleheader. So what does a team that was nearly perfect last week do for an encore?”In doubles, we are going to want to finish the points a bit more efficiently and be more aggressive at the net,” Mattera explained. “We also would like to control the court a little better in singles and play a bit tighter to the net to give us some more opportunities to finish points with volleys and overheads.”Aggressiveness and confidence are things Mattera has been pushing all season with his team. With Washington, the aggressive philosophy will have its first big test of the spring season.Gonzaga, on the other hand, is a little bit of a wildcard. The Aztecs have never played the Bulldogs, so they’re still unsure of what their opponent will have in store for them.”Gonzaga is a bit of an unknown as we’ve never played them before,” Mattera said. “Gonzaga is in the West Coast Conference, the same as USD, so by Friday we hope to have a little bit better feel of what kind of team they are.”
