The Daily Aztec’s Golfers of the Week honor must be a springboardto Mountain West Conference Player of the Month.
Sophomores Mark Warman and Sandy Kim, DA Golfers of the Week forMarch 19, made it an all-Aztec affair as they were each named the MWCGolfer of the Month for March.
Kim received her first career conference Player-of-the-Month honorby carding a 75.5 stroke average, three strokes better than hercareer average. She also lead the Aztec women to their best finish ofthe year at the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Invitational, where shefinished 6th.
Warman used second-place finishes at the Pacific CoastIntercollegiate and the USD Invitational to grab his inauguralconference Player-of-the-Month award. Warman is currently rankedfourth in the Mountain West with a 72.6 stroke average. That isback-to-back honors for the men. John Lieber was the MWCPlayer-of-the-Month for February.
SanDiego State women’s update
The San Diego State women’s golf team is right where they want tobe despite slipping from 4th place to 10th Tuesday, the final day ofthe BYU Dixie Classic, at the Sunbrook Golf Course, St. George, Utah.
Senior Heather Rollo was the lone Aztec in the top 15 when it wasall said and done. She finished with a three-round total of 13-over229. Sophomore Shayna Miyajima finished tied for 29th (234) andJennifer Hoene finished tied for 33rd (236).
Although the team struggled on the final day of the tournament, itis positioned to complete the goal it set out to achieve when thespring season started.
“Our goal is to make it to regionals,” interim assistant coachFelicia Brown said. “If we can get this young team to regionals thatwould be great for this program.”
The top 21 teams out of the West district will be invited toregionals. The Aztecs are currently No. 17.
San Diego State men’s update
The No. 19 San Diego State men’s golf team has one more regularseason tournament to work out the kinks before the Mountain WestConference Tournament, which will lead to a regional berth.
The Aztecs, who have long held a lock on a regional berth, arelooking to fine tune their game next week at the StanfordInvitational. The team will travel to Northern California April 20-21for its final regular-season tournament of the year.
But the focus is still on the big picture.
“The whole point is to get to Nationals and win it,” head coachDale Walker said. “I expect this team to do that.”
