The San Diego State women’s tennis team had never lost to any of the three squads it played this weekend.
And while the matches scores indicate that SDSU’s weekend sweep Friday, Saturday and Sunday was as easy as one, two, three, head coach Peter Mattera was quick to point out that the victories were nothing to scoff at.
“Anytime you win three matches in three days, it’s impressive,” Mattera said. “Playing that many times it becomes less a tennis match than a war of attrition.”
It was a war that the Aztecs won easily. After winning the first two matches against Colorado State and Wyoming, SDSU wasted no time in defeating Air Force 5-2 to complete the sweep.
With the wins, the Aztecs are now 5-1 in Mountain West Conference play (14-6 overall).
Mattera said he was pleased with his team’s intensity, as well as the fact that they never overlooked three teams that on paper should have just rolled over and died.
“Sometimes the hardest matches to win are the ones that you are supposed to win,” Mattera said. “We really played with good energy, and the team really responded well to the challenge.”
Similar to the first two matches of the weekend, SDSU’s tandem of senior Dita Haurlandova and sophomore Sisse Nielsen won their fifth straight match to help the squad win the doubles point.
After that, the Aztecs never looked back, winning four of the six singles matches to gain an easy victory against the Falcons.
Nielsen continued her recent four-match winning streak, and Hauerlandova extended her own streak (in singles play) to three straight matches.
But despite his team’s strong play, Mattera is still optimistic that the squad can do better.
“We’ve played very good tennis,” Mattera said. “I don’t know if we’ve peaked though; we can still play better.”
The Aztecs’ next chance to play better will come when they continue MWC play next Friday as they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for a match with New Mexico.
“It’s going to be very interesting to see how things work out in Albuquerque,” Mattera said. “These are two very good teams were facing, and it’s going to be a battle.”
