San Diego State garnered statewide representation March 30 with the appointment of Linda Lang, chairwoman and chief executive officer of Jack in the Box to the California State University Board of Trustees.
An SDSU alumna, Lang graduated with a master’s degree in business administration in 1991 and has since been featured on www.forbes.com as one of the “Top-Returning Female CEOs” in 2008.
“As a product of the CSU system and a successful businesswoman, Ms. Lang brings a unique perspective to the board,” Rachel Cameron, a spokesperson for the governor’s office, said when asked why Lang was chosen for the position.
Lang, who is replacing former trustee Kyriakos Tsakopoulos, will serve an eight-year term on the board, which is “responsible for the oversight of the California State University,” according to the CSU Web Site.
Such responsibilities include developing administrative policy, appointing the chancellor and vice chancellor and monetary, property and facility management.
“I am delighted that Linda Lang has been appointed to the Board of Trustees. She is an SDSU graduate, a successful businesswoman and she has been a strong supporter of SDSU though her involvement, for example, on the College of Business Advisory Board. She will serve the state of California extremely well,” SDSU Provost Nancy Marlin said in a written statement.
On the cuff of Lang’s appointment came news last week that California did not receive enough federal stimulus dollars to avoid a $50 million reduction in the 2009 to 2010 CSU budget on top of “$948 million in cuts to specific programs,” according to CSU Web Site’s Budget Central.
Associated Students Vice President of External Affairs Daniel Osztreicher said that while it was unfortunate SDSU didn’t have much of a voice during the state budget crisis, Lang’s presence on the Board of Trustees will be highly beneficial for the university’s future.
“It’s good to have another Aztec on (the board),” Osztreicher said.
