Southwick, a freshman goalkeeper, was named Mountain West Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and is thriving in her first season with the San Diego State women’s soccer team.
The Danville native has kept SDSU afloat by not allowing a goal in the last 286 minutes and averaging 0.45 goals allowed per game. The Aztecs are lacking in offense, but Southwick’s efforts have been spectacular.
SDSU’s starting cornerbacks and safeties are inexperienced – the four players totaled just nine starts in 2006 – and it showed last Saturday against Washington State in an embarrassing 45-17 loss.
The Aztecs allowed 469 passing yards, good for 118th in the country, and were repeatedly outrun by their opponents.
