On Friday, The Associated Press reported a new postseason game between teams from the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences is currently in development.
The unnamed bowl game would be hosted in Albuquerque, N.M. and has received a $2 million line of credit from ESPN, according to the AP.
This would be the MWC’s fourth bowl game tie-in and third for the WAC. The addition of this bowl game gives the San Diego State football team an additional opportunity to enter the postseason. SDSU has gone up against WAC squads such as Hawaii and San Jose State (beating the Spartans and losing to the Rainbow Warriors) last year and will play SJSU on Sept. 30.
“It looks very good right now,” New Mexico Athletic Director Rudy Davalos said to the AP. “I think it has an excellent chance of being approved, especially with ESPN offering the financial credit.”
ESPN has been pivotal in the development of new bowl games in recent years; the company owns and operates the Las Vegas Bowl, the Fort Worth Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl.
One problem hindering the game’s creation is that of offsetting costs, particularly the payoff to bowl teams; the payouts generally range from $750,000 to $2 million.
Dennis Latta, executive director of the New Mexico Sports Authority Board, told the AP he’s excited about the potential matchup between the MWC and the WAC, which would also give the two conferences a chance to rekindle old rivalries, after the MWC broke off from the WAC in 1999.
