The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Fisher as a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award. The other four finalists are Ohio State’s Thad Matta, Notre Dame’s Mike Brey and BYU’s Dave Rose.
Last week, Fisher was named the USBWA District IX Coach of the Year and the Mountain West Conference Co-Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a 32-2 record this season.
The No. 6/5 Aztecs earned an automatic bid to the Big Dance after a 72-54 victory against the Cougars in the MWC Tournament last week in Las Vegas. SDSU also earned a share of the regular season title, have been in the top 25 every week and in the top 10 of both major college basketball polls for 13 straight weeks.
On Sunday, the Aztecs earned a No. 2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. In Fisher’s coaching career, this is the second-best seed behind the No. 1 seed his 1993 NCAA runner-up Michigan squad received in the West Region.
