The San Diego State women’s tennis team ended its roller-coaster season Friday with a loss to University of Wyoming at the Mountain West championships.
The Aztecs put up a valiant effort securing the doubles point, but the Cowgirls showed their grit and ended up pulling out a narrow 4-3 victory.
The match was played inside as the wind was too strong for fair play, which definitely benefited a Wyoming team used to the indoors. However, SDSU head coach Peter Mattera made no excuses.
“It was a great college tennis match,” Mattera said. “You always hate to end your season at any time, but especially after a good competitive fight like that.”
The Aztecs had a year to remember and turned things around at the end of the season, winning seven of their last nine matches, which provided some momentum they hope to carry over for next season.
Although SDSU will lose seniors Kristin Buth and Hailey Johnson, it’ll bring back a strong team. The squad will feature current sophomore Kennedy Davis, junior Tami Nguyen and freshman Paola Diaz.
“We are certainly aspiring to be even better still next year, especially given the strong returning cast that we have,” said Mattera.
